The history of agriculture began thousands of years ago. After gathering wild grains beginning at least 105,000 years ago, nascent farmers began to plant them around 11,500 years ago. Pigs, sheep and cattle were domesticated over 10,000 years ago. Plants were independently cultivated in at least 11 regions of the world. Industrial agriculture based on large-scale monoculture in the twentieth century came to dominate agricultural output, though about 2 billion people still depended on subsistence agriculture into the twenty-first.

    Abstract A new permanently positively charged stable isotope labeling (SIL) agent pair, 4-(((2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl)oxy)carbonyl)-N,N,N-trimethylbenzenaminium iodide(DPTBA) and its deuterated counterpart d3-DPTBA, was designed and synthesized. The SIL agents were applied to the liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry analysis of alkylphenols. Light labeled standards and heavy labeled samples were mixed and analyzed simultaneously. Matrix effect which mainly occurred during the ionization process was minimized because of the identical ionization processes between samples and standards. Meanwhile, derivatization made alkylphenols be positively charged, and thus the sensitivity was enhanced. The limits of detection were in the range of 1.5–1.8 ng/L, and the limits of quantitation were in the range of 4.8–6.1 ng/L. The developed method was applied to analyze alkylphenols migrated from plastics to edible oils. The recoveries for all analytes were in the range of 88.6–95.3%, while the matrix effects for all analytes were in the range of 96.2–99.6%.

Nine new flavonoids [cepaflavas A, B (5, 6), cepadials A–D (7–9 and 14), and cepabiflas A–C (10–12)] and six known compounds (1–4, 13, 15) were obtained from the outer skins of Allium cepa L. Among them, compounds 5, 6, and 9 might be artificial products formed during extraction and isolation.     Diversified farming
    I’ve been planning for some time to add a Mushroom Production Resources Page to Beginning Farmers. Gourmet mushrooms are a high value crop which can be a great addition to a diversified farming operation, especially if they are lucky enough to be situated on land with a decent parcel of hardwood forest (for log production), or willing to invest in the equipment necessary for more intensive cultivation.     Wild harvesting mushrooms can also be a lot of fun, and fairly lucrative, if you know where to go and when, and can find a buyer. Many gourmet restaurants are thrilled to get wild-harvested mushrooms, so it’s worth trying to make these connections. I have done this with both morel’s and hen of the woods (see pictures below).
